UK: The University of Manchester - Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS)
ORS awards provide funding to help outstanding full time postgraduate research students from
outside the U.K and European Union. The awards pay the difference between the
standard international student tuition fees and the standard home/EU student tuition fees
charged by the University. ORS awards do not cover the home/EU fee element, maintenance or
travel expenses; or the remainder of any outstanding overseas fees.
Candidates who are successful in obtaining an ORS award might in some cases receive an
additional scholarship from their Faculty/School to cover the Home/EU rate of tuition fees and
a contribution towards living costs.
Please note to be eligible to apply for an ORS award:
• you must be liable for international tuition fees.
• you must be able to demonstrate outstanding merit and research potential.
• you must not have previously studied at PhD or equivalent level.
• you must not have held an ORS award before.
• the School in which you wish to study must support your application.

Portugal: International Neuroscience Doctoral Programme
Applications from independent thinkers with curiosity, creativity and drive are sought to join the International Neuroscience Doctoral Programme (INDP). The INDP aims to provide students of diverse backgrounds with a foundation to perform innovative and interdisciplinary work in basic or applied neuroscience at an international level.
Predoctoral training in quantitative disciplines (e.g. physics, mathematics, computer science), biological sciences (e.g. biology, medicine, bioengineering) or related fields is important. Previous research experience is also desirable but not required. Applicants should have a master degree and/or a 4+ year undergraduate degree, or will be obtaining their degree by no later than December 31, 2011.
The INDP is associated with the Champalimaud Neuroscience Programme, soon comprising twelve research groups with a focus on the neural circuits and systems underlying mind and behaviour. Over 40 students are currently enrolled in the INDP, which will enter its fifth year in September 2011.
Before beginning thesis research, admitted students will complete one year of intensive courses led by distinguished local and invited international scientists. The topics of instruction include molecular & cellular biology, ecology & evolution, neurophysiology & neuroanatomy, learning & development, sensory & motor systems, and computational & cognitive neuroscience, while the overall format emphasizes team work and informal interaction in both classroom and laboratory.
The INDP is supported by funding from the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), the Champalimaud Foundation, and the Gulbenkian Foundation. Successful applicants of all nationalities will be supported by a Training Fellowship (BI-Bolsa de Investigação) from the FCT and, if accepted for the second phase, by a Doctoral Fellowship (BD-Bolsa de Doutoramento) for a period of up to 3 years, to perform thesis work in local or national research groups. Portuguese citizens are also eligible for FCT support for thesis work in selected laboratories anywhere in the world.
The application deadline is March 1st, 2011. Further information on eligibility, entrance requirements and application procedures is available at http://neuro.fchampalimaud.org/education/indp/application/start .
