Austria: International PhD Programme in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology The consortium of the Bioinformatics Integration Network is organizing an international PhD programme. The PhD courses will be common throughout the network and the candidates will be supervised by two PIs (supervisor and co-supervisor). We intend to include additional members from other EU countries in the doctorate committee in order to meet the requirements for the "European Doctorate" - a non-profit making Association which aims to "promote degrees in Biotechnology at the Masters and Doctoral levels.
An "Outstanding Scholar" program will be established to identify new bioinformaticians who have demonstrated research excellence. The program aims to rotate the students for three months in one of the participating labs or in the labs of our international collaborators in order to get exposure to other bioinformatics techniques.

Austria: CeMM PhD program - The Medical University of Vienna Since 2006 young scientists have the possibility to participate in the CeMM PhD program. For each yearly intake, the program is advertised internationally in scientific journals such as Nature. The Medical University of Vienna is the home academic institution for the CeMM PhD program, and as such sets several guidelines. There is mandatory course work, particularly in the first year taking 6-7 hours per week, including basic seminars and propedeutics in molecular medicine, cell biology, intellectual property, the economics of biomedical research, biotech industry and ethics as well as dissertation seminars and regular journal clubs. Informal CeMM work discussions are held every Friday and students will present their work on a regular basis. Austria: International PhD program in Molecular Cell Biology and Molecular Oncology, Innsbruck Medical University MCBO builds on two existing doctoral programs at the Innsbruck Medical University. Depending on the research focus, students will be enrolled in one of them but are free to choose from a broad range of elective courses of both programs. In addition, MCBO will offer a series of special courses in proteomics, bioinformatics, and genetic epidemiology.
The chief goal of the PhD program is to acquire the ability to conduct an independent research project. MCBO will provide the training and support to achieve this goal.
The duration of the MCBO doctoral program is three years. During this time a total of 30 semester-hours (fifteen 45-minute units each) have to be completed.
In addition, MCBO students will conduct part of their research (six months) in an outside research institution.
The progress of the thesis will be regularly monitored by a thesis committee assigned to each student.
Open PhD positions will be advertised annually. The call will open in Spring and candidates will be selected in September.
