Travel grants, Fellowships 1686 2      Africa: Africa Genome Education Institute AGEI The Africa Genome Education Institute is devoted to the public understanding of the structure and function of biological material called genomes (or sets of genes that govern organisms from birth to death). We focus in particular on genetically inherited diseases and genetic-susceptibilities to diseases among our human population. Examples in the South African context of the former are albinism, Tay-Sachs disease, porphyria, cystic fibrosis, sickle-cell anaemia, retinal disorders and hypertension. Examples of the latter are HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and sleeping Sickness. We hold an annual conference every year at the end of March. Our founding conference was held in Stellenbosch in 2003, the second one in Cairo in 2004, the third one in Nairobi in 2005, and the next one will held in Somerset-West in 2006 with the theme being The Genetics & Sociology of Human Variation. In collaboration of the University of Cape Town Division of Human Genetics, we are host to the Darwin Seminars, which feature reflections on what modern genetics tell us about the evolution of life. Occasionally we hold biology dialogues with young secondary-school going scholars and learners on topics of compelling importance to their lives. In our context, we are particularly concerned about whether young South Africans properly understand the biological science of HIV/AIDS. At present, the Academy has 33 full voting members, 29 corresponding national members, 59 corresponding foreign members, and 6 honorary members.The Academy bestows awards to scientists for their distinguished contributions in diverse areas of science and technology and has exchange programmes with academies, societies, and learned bodies in several countries. The Academy publishes journals and reports and recognizes young scientists through an awards scheme, and arranges seminars and symposia. The Academy also grants fellowships to university students. Argentina,South America, Project grants 1841 5      Australia: Australian Academy of Science The Academy was founded in 1954 by Australian Fellows of the Royal Society of London. It was established under a Royal Charter as an independent body but with government endorsement. The Academy's Constitution was modelled on that of the Royal Society of London. It receives government grants for its activities but has no statutory obligation to government. The objects of the Academy are to promote science through a range of activities, including: recognition of outstanding contributions to science; education and public awareness; science policy; international relations; and science and industry. Both organizations agreed to pursue the following common goals: Promoting successful redirection of scientists once devoted entirely to weapons design and production to civilian research and development activities. The Academys mandate covers four main principal areas: mobilization and strengthening of the African scientific community; publication and dissemination of scientific materials; research development and policy; and capacity building in science and technology. The AAS is first and foremost an honorific society which honours and recognizes scientists who have made significant contribution to science in Africa and secondly, it is a programmatic organization, which develops, articulates, and implements definite strategies, programmes and projects with tangible results in pursuit of its objectives. During its first decade, AAS is proud to have achieved most of its objectives and to have carved out a niche for itself as a forum for intellectual and scientific discourse in Africa. These achievements have not been easy in a continent that is primarily an agrarian society and with many difficult conditions, resulting in drastic reduction of budgets in support of science and technology. The officers and staff of the Academy have worked tirelessly to develop programmes that cater for the needs of not only the scientists in the natural sciences but also those of the social sciences and which address among other issues, food security, regional integration and conflict resolution in Africa. Under the Awards and Entrepreneurship scheme, AAS has so far awarded three (3) prizes to four (4) scientists in Agricultural Biosciences over the past 8 years. 2151 8      Africa: CGIAR, Gender and diversity programme THE CGIAR CENTERS launched the Gender and Diversity Program (G&D) in July 1999. Its purpose is to help the Centers leverage rich staff diversity to increase research and management excellence in agricultural research. African Women in Agricultural R & D (AWARD): African women working in agricultural research and development from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia who have completed a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in selected disciplines are invited to apply. Applicants must be nationals of the above listed countries and be available in Africa throughout the fellowship period. The deadline for all applications is March 22, 2010. Fellowships: AWARD offers two-year fellowships to fast track the careers of African women delivering pro-poor research and development. Activities funded under this pogramme include training of talented youths, supporting their participation in national scientific and technical events, stimulating the organization of specialized schools, universities, etc. and in this way accomplishing a phase of the process of constant learning and including activities of the Foundation as an element of the economics of knowledge. I.Training Support for the education process in institutes for higher education and high schools is done by granting scholarships to: winners in national competitions for special named scholarships of the Foundation, according their status; regular university and high school students winners in International Olympiads, according the approved by the Council of the Foundation list, when they continue their education in the areas in which they have expressed their talent; university and high school students according to conditions of donations; The Council of the Foundation determines the amount of the scholarships. II. Specialized schools, universities and others The Foundation organizes and participates in the organization and funding of specialized national schools and universities for science, engineering, technology and management as a possibility for broadening and improving the professional preparation of young people in strategic fields of development of science and economics. III.International congresses, symposia and other scientific events The Foundation assists young researchers, students and specialists up to the age of 35, by covering the expenses for their participation in international congresses, symposium and conferences. 1728 13      Belgium: Royal Academy of Overseas Sciences The Royal Academy of Overseas Sciences was founded in 1928 with the aim of promoting scientific knowledge in overseas regions. The Academy is divided into three Sections: the Section of Moral and Political Sciences, the Section of Natural and Medical Sciences and the Section of Technical Sciences. ,Africa,Asia,Central America,South America,Europe, Prizes, Fellowships 1716 14      Belgium: Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) UOS With the budget line South Initiatives VLIR-UOS wants to make possible new forms of cooperation between academics with tenure at a Flemish university and academics with tenure at a university or research institute in a developing country. It is essential that the funding through this budget line is considered as seed money (for any subsequent regular projects within the existing VLIR-UOS programmes), as harvest money (to broaden the impact of earlier projects) or as encouragement for innovative forms of cooperation (that may subsequently grow into regular programmes). A South Initiative has a duration no more than 1 year and a maximum budget of 15,000 Euros. Each year, VLIR-UOS launches two calls for the submission of proposals. The call is also available in English to enable the southern partners to become acquainted with the call. Africa,Asia,Central America,South America, Project grants, Fellowships 1629 15      Brazil: Brazilian Academy of Sciences Aristides Leao Scientific Vocational Stimulus Program. This program was created in 1994, by the Science and Technology Ministry and member of the Academy Jose Israel Vargas, on the occasion of the posthumous homage the emeritus president of the BAS, Aristides Pacheco Leao. The main objective is to offer the undergraduate students scientific activity opportunities for work, during summer vacations, in laboratories supervised by Academy members, participating in productive research topics. The financial resources of the Aristídes Leao Program originate from the MCT in the form of scholarships for scientific initiation. The grant covers three months of internship and a return bus ticket, to and from the institutions or laboratories involved. The Academy does not provide for housing expenses. For the 1997/98 term, 37 interns were approved, but in the 1998/99 period the program was suspended due to the long interruptions at the universities last year. At the end of the Insternship, each student must submit to the Academy a report describing their activities during the period, adequately approved by their research advisor. The students that successfully complete the internship will recive a certificate from the Brazilian Academy of Science. The first Academy of Sciences was founded, after many years of negotiation with the Spanish Crown, on May 19, 1861, with the title of Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences. Today, the Academy, formed by scientists of outstanding merit representing the national scientific community aims to: foster Cuban science; disseminate national and universal scientific progress; raise the standards of professional ethics and social recognition of science; and strengthen links between scientists and their organizations, both among themselves, and with the rest of the world. Within the Academy, there are 5 academic divisions with more than 630 academicians working in 123 institutes located in 13 major cities across the country: Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hefei, Changchun, Shenyang, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Kunming, Xi'an, Lanzhou, Ururnqi (Xinjiang) and Hainan. The Academy has also promoted the creation of 400 high-tech spin-offs.
