Job Description The Molecular Immunology Unit Institut Jules Bordet, Université Libre de Bruxelles is recruiting a student with a masters/engineering degree in the biological or biomedical sciences for a 2 year doctoral fellowship, with the possibility of renewal. The Molecular Immunology Unit (MIU) focuses on both fundamental research and clinical applications related to understanding normal immune functions (with a principal focus on CD4+ T cells) and how they deviate in human disease. CD4+ T cells, aptly called helper T cells, play a central role in directing various branches of the immune response, and therefore their fitness is critical to balanced and effective immunity. This thesis research project will center on specific genes that the MIU has identified as abnormally expressed by CD4+ T cells isolated from breast tumors, with an emphasis on genes that play a role in controlling anti-tumor immunity. The techniques employed in the lab include: cell culture, flow cytometry and cell sorting, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence analysis of tissue sections, and a wide range of standard molecular biology approaches such as protein and nucleic acid extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, transfection and transduction, cloning and site-directed mutagenesis, microarray analysis, Western blotting, etc. The lab is composed of individuals from a diversity of countries and cultures, with English or French used as working languages. This fellowship is foreseen to start in the 2012-2013 academic year.
Qualification Masters/Engineering degree in the biological or biomedical sciences (note: if the diploma is not from a Belgian university it must be recognized by the Université Libre de Bruxelles as equivalent).
How to Apply Candidates should send their CV, complete with technical expertise, academic grades and references, along with a letter of motivation and a summary of their master’s thesis research (completed or to be completed in the 2011-2012 academic year) to Dr. Karen Willard-Gallo (kwillard@ulb.ac.be; karen.willard-gallo@bordet), Head, Molecular Immunology Unit, Institut Jules Bordet, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Blvd de Waterloo 127, 1000 Brussels, Belgium.
