Job Description We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to carry out structural studies of Intraflagellar transport complexes working in a research environment of biochemists, X-ray crystallographers and electron microscopists. The PhD candidate will be hired within the framework of an ERC project that aims to understand the structural and regulatory mechanisms that govern cilium formation as well as the basis for the many disease causing mutations in ciliary proteins. The main project of the PhD candidate will be to collect and analyze single-particle cryo-EM data of available intraflagellar transport complexes. Additional biophysical methods such as small angle X-ray scattering, ultracentrifugation, static light scattering and X-ray crystallography are available in the department to aid these studies. The PhD candidate will be jointly supervised by Naoko Mizuno (cryo-EM) and Esben Lorentzen (X-ray crystallography) and will have access to state of the art equipment for structural studies of large protein complexes.
Qualification The candidate should hold (or be about to complete) a master degree or equivalent in one of the biological or physical sciences. Experience in structural biology (Cryo-EM in particular) and/or protein biochemistry is an advantage. The candidate should also have good english communications skills (spoken and written) and be highly motivated to do research in the field of structural cell biology.
