Job Description PhD candidates will be part of a Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) that aims to implement an integrated approach in studying the role of chronic DNA damage in ageing and age-related pathology. A large number of progeroid syndromes that are characterized by an early onset of age-related pathology are linked to inborn defects in genome maintenance thus pointing towards damage in (nuclear) DNA as a major culprit of ageing and age-related pathology. DNA damage fuelled by intrinsic and environmental sources of genotoxic insult and by errors of genome maintenance mechanisms invariably accumulates with advancing age. In the context of Marie Curie Network PhD candidates will become involved in studies addressing the role of DNA damage and repair mechanisms in age-related pathology and lifespan determination using model organisms such as Caenorhabditis elegans, cultured mammalian cells and mice. Specific activities include the investigation of the consequences of DNA damage on neuronal function, and the identification of molecular pathways modulated by longevity assurance mechanisms that enhance resistance to DNA damage.
Qualification We invite applications from highly motivated and outstanding students with a background in molecular biology, genetics, cell biology and biological imaging. The following qualifications are also a plus: Master’s in life sciences or equivalent degree, excellent writing and communication skills in English, a strong focus on results, respecting deadlines, and taking initiatives.
Compensation Standard Marie Curie ITN stipend, before tax according to the regulations of the host Institution
